Student Legal Services (SLS)

SLS continues to serve the need of the students of the university by providing high-quality legal services to clients.

SLS interviewed almost 2000 clients in the past year. In addition we provide speakers to several student groups. Those engagements have included the U-M chapter of the Society of Women Engineers, who were presented with a panel of speakers that included officers from the Department of Public Safety, Housing and SLS. Students were able to ask questions that covered a broad range of legal areas. Incoming international students received a presentation titled "It's not just a good idea, it's the law," sponsored by the International Center. The intent of the program was to familiarize new students with the laws of the State of Michigan that might be unfamiliar to them. SLS has also participated in the "Chicken and Beer" program at Alice Lloyd.

Hearing From Students

The SLS advisory committee is currently looking for students to participate. If you are interested please contact the SLS director.

There are two areas of concern that currently need the attention of the advisory committee:

The director has suggested a survey be sent to students to seek general input. The information would be used to help determine the office's priorities. The advisory board will be reviewing the survey draft and suggesting ways to execute it.

The program is trying to institute a peer review system of itself which will be performed by attorneys from other legal services programs.

For additional information please see our website.
