Program on Intergroup Relations (IGR)
As a partnership between the Division of Student Affairs and the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, the Program on Intergroup Relations (IGR) provides opportunities for students to learn about issues of intergroup relations and social justice. IGR offers multiple courses and co-curricular activities – many in collaboration with other units – that address social identity, intergroup relations, and social justice.
Hearing From Students
All students enrolled in courses have the opportunity to complete an anonymous course evaluation that provides instructors and the program with valued feedback and suggestions for improvement. In addition, due to the nature of the courses, there are multiple opportunities for feedback throughout the semester.
What's New?
The CHANGE program during welcome week (Creating a Healthy and New Generation of Equality) is a collaboration among many units within the Division of Student Affairs and across the University –including IGR. Specifically, the ExCHANGE event featuring conversations among incoming students about social identity was developed by IGR, MESA, MSA and other collaborators.
The most recent additions to IGR’s course offerings include a dialogue among international and US Students, a dialogue on multi-racial identity, and a dialogue on White racial identity.
In 2005, IGR implemented a series of Summer Youth Dialogues in Metropolitan Detroit involving high school students from different ethnic communities. These dialogues, facilitated by undergraduate students at U-M, culminated in a retreat at the U-M Ann Arbor campus featuring cross-group interaction, alliance building, and action planning.
Recently, IGR and several programs offering intergroup dialogues at colleges and universities across the country have begun implementing a multi-year research evaluation of the educational benefits of intergroup dialogues.
