Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

CAPS works hard throughout the year to remain grounded in a student focus. University student mental health is our mission. As part of this mission, we encourage student input and feedback in a variety of ways that gets folded into our administrative processes.

CAPS is an accredited full-service university counseling center that serves the U-M student community and is a unit within the Division of Student Affairs. CAPS provides a full range of high quality psychological services to the U-M student community with the intent of fostering the psychological development and the emotional well being of students. CAPS professional staff provide scheduled individual and group counseling, psychiatric services, walk-in and crisis counseling, consultation to faculty/staff/students about students for which they have concerns, preventive and educational programming, and an active training program.

CAPS Staffing:
  • 20 professional staff (psychologists, social workers, psychiatrist, psychiatric nurse) diverse in race, gender, sexual orientation, age, as well as theoretical orientation and approach to therapy; around 350 combined years of experience. CAPS has been mindful over the years of trying to gather a staff that is diverse and representative of our student body.
  • 4 second year school of Social Work interns (1/2 time)
  • 1 U-M Department of Psychology consortium intern (1/2 time)
  • 3 Pre-doctoral psychology interns
  • 2 Post-doctoral psychologists
  • 3 Support staff
CAPS Accreditation
  • International Association of Counseling Services
  • American Psychological Association for Predoctoral Internship in Professional Psychology
  • The Association of Counseling Center Training Agencies
Hearing From Students
CAPS receives feedback from students in several ways:
  • Holding in-depth client satisfaction surveys at various points throughout the year
  • Studying and making decisions based on the survey and also trends that are happening across the country – trends that are available through national surveys, counseling center surveys, benchmarking studies, Student Affairs publications/studies, etc.
  • Receiving student comments and input (from clients and also students who are not clients)
  • Working with Michigan Student Assembly and other student governing structures and receiving input and answers to questions posed by CAPS

This year, CAPS also plans to implement a web-based method for students (clients and students who are not clients) to give input and feedback online. The goal of the latter is to reach students who are not clients and to create a sustainable, ongoing way to receive input and feedback.

What's New?

A consultant has been appointed to advise the Vice President on matters regarding changes to the delivery of sexual assault education, clinical and outreach services here at Michigan.

Update on Sexual Assault Services/Safe Space

We have worked hard over the last year to ensure a smooth transition to our increased sexual violence counseling and clinical work. Two new professional staff have joined our counseling staff, and we have completed construction that allows for expanded space – as part of this construction project, we have created a separate waiting area as an option for students. And, we have created new policies and procedures to ensure a high-quality environment for service delivery in this area.
