Vencedores Samba Bateria Constitution

Preamble

Vencedores Samba Bateria is a Brazilian Samba Band comprised of University of Michigan Students, Staff, Alumni and the Ann Arbor Community that promotes a learning environment for drumming, dance and song from the Afro-Brazilian Cultures. The mission of the organization is to perform, present and educate the University of Michigan and surrounding communities about this energetic and infectious music.

Article I. Name

Vencedores Samba Bateria

Article II. Purpose

The purpose of the organization is to broaden the knowledge of regional music from Brazil while learning about the cultural and social connections to the music. This group was founded to bring musicians and dancers together who share an interest in Brazilian samba in order to perform this music.

Article III. Membership

Section 1.

Membership is open to students, staff, and faculty of the University of Muchigan, as well as Ann Arbor Comminity members

Section 2.

University of Michigan School of Music Theater and Dance Percussion Program Students may join the organization. The Advisor and Officers will make the final decision on membership for non-UM SMTD Percussion Program perspective members.

Section 3.

Members are expected to attend rehearsals and performances. Exceptions must be approved by the Advisor and Officers.

Article IV. Officers

Section 1.

President - Run meetings, member relations and organizational agenda Secretary - Minutes for meetings, and recording and posting rehearsals Treasurer – Handles organization’s account and financial business Press Secretary – Coordinating the documentation and dissemination of video and photo for all performances, and promotional material Web Secretary - Develop and maintain the Vencedores Samba Bateria website

Section 2.

The Officers and Advisor comprise of the executive committee.

Section 3.

The Advisor serves as the music director and contact for potential presenters who hire the organization to perform.

Article V. Operations

Section 1.

Members must have been in the organization for two terms prior to running for elections.

Section 2.

Officers are elected at the Samba Boot Camp each September. This is completed through secret ballot.

Section 3.

Officers take positions in January, and must be able to hold office for one year.

Section 4.

The Advisor will count ballots. The Advisor will conduct run-off in event of a tie.

Article VI. Finances

Section 1.

Activies will be financed through paid performances and MSA approved funds.

Section 2.

The Treasurer will be responsible for handling the organization’s finances.

Article VII. Amendments

Section 1.

Amendments must be proposed during the annual Samba Boot Camp meeting, or any general meeting called by the executive committee.

Section 2.

Amendments may be proposed by members or the Advisor.

Section 3.

Amendments may be proposed and voted on in the same meeting.

Article VIII. Registration Renewal

Section 1.

All members of the organization will meet in the first week of September to cast votes for a new Executive Committee. The new Executive Committee selected will need to file for renewal of the organization before the end of September.

Article IX. Removal of Membership

Section 1.

The Advisor may propose removal of an Officer. Removal will then be voted on by the members.

Section 3.

Executive committee will have disgression to expel members if that they do not attend rehearsals and performances, or for other circumstance as they arise.

Section 4.

Members will be removed through vote by the Executive Committee.

Article X. By-Laws

Section 1. - Rehearsals Rehearsal will be weekly, on Monday Evenings evenings from 9:00 to 11:00 PM. The Advisor will adjust and distribute the schedule as needed. If sectionals are needed, section leaders will schedule a sectional rehearsal 30 minutes prior to full rehearsal on those Monday evenings. Section 2. - Meetings The Samba Boot Camp and general membership meeting will be held the first Sunday after Labor Day each year. Section 3. – Uniforms The uniforms for performances include white shoes, white socks, white drawstring scrubs, and the official Vencedores jersey. Members will be required to purchase shoes and pants. Jerseys will possibly be subsidized.
