Cuba Week Constitution
Preamble
Cuba Week
Article I. Name
The official name of the organization will be Cuba Week.
Article II. Purpose
Cuba week will be a committee of students committed to facilitating a cultural exchange between the United
States and Cuba. Through the organization of a week of events during Hispanic Heritage Month, Cuba Week will
promote Cuban culture on campus and within the community. The organization will further goodwill and
understanding between the United States and Cuba as well as well as encourage the celebration of diversity on
campus.
Article III. Membership
Section 1.

Cuba Week is open to all students, faculty, and staff at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Section 2.

Membership is defined as belonging to the e-mail group and attending scheduled meetings. One may become a
member by contacting the member listed on the Maize Pages website.
Section 3.

Members wishing to withdraw may contact the executive board to have the e-mail address removed from the group.
Article IV. Officers
Section 1.

There will be four co-chairs within the organization. Each of the co-chairs will be responsible for working
together to oversee group operations, recruitment, and collaboration with other organizations as well as
working with university officials, documentation, and applying for grants.
Section 2.

There are no committees in Cuba Week.
Section 3.

The advisor will oversee group operations and provide guidance to members of Cuba week in regards to planning
events, collaborating with other organizations, working with university officials and applying for grants.
Article V. Operations
Section 1.

All members in good standing are eligible for office.
Section 2.

Officers are elected before the Christmas holiday. Elections will be conducted by secret ballot, with those
winning by receiving the most votes in each race.
Section 3.

Newly elected officers will assume their positions after classes resume for the Winter Semester.
Section 4.

The advisor will not have a role in elections.
Article VI. Finances
Section 1.

Cuba Week will finance the organization by applying for grants and fundraising.
Section 2.

The co-chairs share the responsibilities for the organization’s finances and are required to report to the
other co-chairs and the membership. The chairs must maintain clear and transparent records.
Article VII. Amendments
Section 1.

Amendments may be proposed to the board.
Section 2.

Members may propose amendments to the board.
Section 3.

Amendments must be approved by a majority of the board before the entire organization may vote on them.
Article VIII. Registration Renewal
Section 1.

Officers shall be removed due to personal resignation or failure to comply to fulfill commitments of the position.
Article IX. Removal of Membership
Section 1.

Officers shall be removed due to personal resignation or failure to comply to fulfill commitments of the
position.
Section 2.

The executive board must present the reasons for dismissing an officer and the officer will be given an
opportunity to respond to the allegations. Afterwards, the entire organization, with the exclusion of the
executive board, will vote to dismiss the officer in a 2/3 majority. Members wishing to dismiss an officer
must report to the executive board. Dismissed officers may still retain membership with Cuba Week and
depending on the circumstances may run again the following year.
Section 3.

Members will be removed if university policies or organization rules are broken.
Section 4.

The executive board must vote unanimously to dismiss members. Officers may abstain from voting, especially if
there is a conflict of interest.
Article X. By-Laws
- If needed, Cuba Week By-Laws will be established if circumstances are warranted.
