Gamma Sigma Alpha Constitution
Preamble
We, the members of Gamma Sigma Alpha in order to recognize exemplary scholastic achievement by members of the Greek community, do hereby establish the following Constitution.
Article I. Name
The name of the organization will be the Alpha Omicron Chapter of Gamma Sigma Alpha, henceforth referred to as GSA.
Article II. Purpose
Gamma Sigma Alpha is a national academic honor society for fraternity and sorority members, founded at the University of Southern California in 1989 to promote intellectual interaction between Greek students and the academic community. The purpose of the society is to promote the advancement of education among Greeks, to instill a greater spirit of cooperation among Greek students and organizations, and to encourage excellence in scholarship.
Article III. Membership
Section 1.

GSA is developed and coordinated by students. Students are eligible for membership based on their grade point average and active membership in a Greek fraternity or sorority recognized by the University of Michigan. The society strives to uphold the high ideals of scholastic achievement, and therefore, only students with a cumulative grade point average of 3.7 and junior or senior standing are eligible.

GSA membership is by invitation only and does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex (including gender identity and expression), color, religion, creed, national origin or ancestry, age, marital status, sexual orientation, disability, or Vietnam-era veteran status.

Article IV. Officers
Section 1.

GSA will be governed by the following means:
1. President - preside at all meetings and oversee all activities.
2. VP Internal Affairs – maintain email group and membership database. Renew membership registration with Student Activities and Leadership (SAL) and file paperwork for Student Organization Accounts Service (SOAS)
3. VP Finance – deposit membership checks and retrieve necessary fund from SOAS for social events.
4. VP Events – organize initiation and social events.
5. VP Membership – obtain list of eligible students from the Office of the Registrar and notify them of their eligibility for GSA.

Article V. Operations
Section 1.

Any member of GSA who will be a University of Michigan student the school year following the election is elegible for office.
Section 2.

a. All officers shall be elected by a majority vote of the eligible voting members of GSA. All
elections will be held on an annual basis following the Winter term initiation.
b. The President will take self-nominations from the floor, the nomination process must be closed and the
movement seconded.
c. All voting shall be done by secret ballot to be collected and tabulated by the Treasurer and one voting member of GSA, appointed by the outgoing President.

Officers assume their positions at the beginning of the following school year.

Article VI. Finances
Section 1.

GSA will finance the activities it engages in by the following means:
1. Direct funding from the University’s General Fund
2. Membership dues
Section 2.

The Vice President of Finance, as described in Article IV, Section I, is responsible for the organization's finances.
Article VII. Amendments
Section 1.

This constitution is binding to all members of GSA. But the constitution is not binding unto itself. Amendments to the constitution may be proposed in writing at any meeting at which 2/3 of the voting members is present.
Section 2.

Any voting member of GSA can propose an Amendment.
Section 3.

These amendments will be placed on the agenda for the next regular meeting of the executive council or other officer grouping. Proposed amendments will become effective following approval of two-thirds (2/3) vote of all active members.
Article VIII. Registration Renewal

Article IX. Removal of Membership
Section 1.

Any officer of GSA in violation of GSA’s purpose or constitution may be removed from office.
Section 2.

Officers may be removed from office by the following process:
i. A written request by at least three members of the Organization
ii. Written notification to the officer of the request, asking the officer to be present at the
next meeting and prepared to speak
iii. A two-thirds (2/3) majority vote is necessary to remove the officer.
Section 3.

Membership in GSA is a lifetime benefit. Members may only be removed in extreme circumstances as determined by the Officers.
Section 4.

The process for removal of general members is to follow that of the removal of officers as outlined above.
