Choosing a good secure password is something that people often overlook. People tend to set passwords that are easy for them to remember – such as their pet’s name, their middle name, their mother’s maiden name. The problem with this is that they are also easy for other people to guess or hack into. You should try to create passwords that adhere to the following rules:
- At least 6 characters
- Include some form of capitalization (i.e. 1 letter is capitalized – not necessarily the first letter)
- Include some form of punctuation (i.e. ! or _)
- Include some numeric values
- Is not a word that is in a standard dictionary
- Should be an acronym for some saying that you will remember (i.e. umFitb would stand for UM Football is the best)
Also never give your password to anyone and if you think someone knows your password change it as soon as possible.
