11:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Location:
OFF/SITE 1301 S. University

Guided Tours: Sunday, July 8 & 15, 2pm Wednesday, July 18, 1pm Thursday, July 19, 1pm Friday, July 20, 1pm

Description: This exhibition of works by eleven photographers -most of whom are unknown to North American audiences- challenges conventional Western assumptions about Japanese aesthetics and culture. Pregnant men posing in a fertility clinic; strangers photographed from outside the windows of their homes; a young woman dressed up in the various costumes of Tokyo teenagers, exploring a consumer-oriented notions of "youth": these are but a few of the puzzling and provocative images presented. Michiko Kasahara, one of Japan's leading curators of contemporary art, has chosen artists whose photographic vision probes the many layers of social and moral anziety that underlie a surface of prosperity and well-being. This exhibition was curated by Michiko Kasahara at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography and organized by the Japan Foundation, Tokyo. The presentation in Ann Arbor is co-oraganized by by the University of Michigan Museum of Art and the Japan Foundation, New York, and supported by Rudolf Arnheim, the Japan Business Society if Detroit Foundation, Marc A. Schwartz, and the University of Michigan's International Institute and Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

By being strategic about how you read, you'll be able to read more efficiently and get more out of what you read. The less effort and more fun it is to read, the more likely you are to do it. Come to this interactive workshop to see how active reading techniques can make reading a more enjoyable and effective process.

7:00 PM - 11:15 PM
Location:
Neutral Zone B- Side 310 East Washington

Type:
Performance

It's welcome week 2007. Classes start Tuesday, and you'll probably spend Monday waiting in line to buy books, but fear not. Look at this as an opportunity to either put the final cap on your summer, or kick off a new school year by securing your place among Ann Arbor's cultural elite. If nothing else, just freak out, because this rock- avant-folk-psychedelic-noise concert is absolutely free brought to you by WCBN 88.3 FM Ann Arbor. http://www.wcbn.org/

The three hand-selected bands performing are: SUNBURNED HAND OF THE MAN (Boston, MA) http://www.myspace.com/sunburnedhandoftheman

ODD CLOUDS (Detroit, MI) (Feat. Jaime Easter, Chris Pottinger of COTTON MUSEUM, SLITHER, Heath Moerland of SICK LLAMA, SLITHER) http://www.tastysoil.com/oddclouds/

GRAVEYARDS (Ypsilanti, MI) (feat. John Olson of WOLF EYES) http://geocities.com/americantapes/

Anyone new to the Ann Arbor music scene or looking for a primer on recent trends in experimental music should look no further than this event, just off campus, smack dab in the middle of "welcome week," which is otherwise known for bland, pandering events promising bad food, worse music, and maybe a disgustingly sweaty bus ride to a supermarket.

While you're at the show, people from WCBN will be on hand to tell you everything you need to know about becoming a DJ at Ann Arbor's only truly independant radio station, 88.3 FM.

That's right, consider yourself warned. This is the place to be September 2nd. Doors at 7. All Ages. No cover!
